Disappointed by the abandonment of the the mega-development in 2009 of the King Alfred towers, Hove, designed by the architect Frank Gehry, Brighton and Hove Council awarded the commission for the new Brighton and Hove Town Hall, to an unknown young architect who is meant to have actually worked alongside Gehry on the original King Alfred design. The new town hall, that was completed in 2011, resembles a fairground helter-skelter. It is actually near impossible for residents to use any of the Council facilities or actually enter the building. This apparently is totally deliberate and is in fact a Council money-saving measure. The building is reported to have gone 20 times over budget...nearly resulting in the financial collapse of the Council. They have since been bailed out by central government, on condition that the building remains an icon and is never actually put into use by Brighton and Hove Council or ever used by anyone! However Helter Skelter has really put Hove on Google maps and it is now the most digitally photographed council buiding in the UK. |
