Driven by the need to create an artwork at City Scale, the Local Council held a competion, back in 2015 for the redundant Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton. The winner was an unknown digital artist from the SAVE HOVE organisation who proposed filling in the whole devlopment with concrete to create a significant international artwork. Surprisingly the artwork has been a huge success and to cope with the large visitor numbers there is even now talk of providing a bus service from Brighton railway station into the centre of the city. This was something that was impossible to justify when Churchill Square was an operating shopping centre, so this project is really an example of how the arts can assist urban regeneration. There is currently a new SAVE HOVE initiative to concretise all shopping centres in the city of Brighton and rumour has it that the local council is even considering the appointment of Gehry Architects to explore this possibility.
