Maybe Alfred Hitchcock's famous horror film 'The Bird's' (1963) was the inspiration for the architects of Brighton's famous new pier, that still lies half-completed in 2020. The structure is officially known as 'Westfield - Brighton', because it was meant to act as a southern 'extension' of the Westfield London Shopping Centre located in White City/Shepherds Bush in London but this project has long since been abandoned. The locals have just dubbed the pier 'Starlingrad' - a reference to the clouds of starlings that have now made the structure their permanent residence and have even started biting any visitors daring to venture into this new shopping paradise! |
